The Types Of Handicaps In Betting

Handicap or spread is a type of bet on a sporting event in which the bookmaker gives a theoretically weaker team a point advantage, to equalize the chance of both sides to win.

The handicap is calculated before the start of the match, and it is added to the final result. The bookmaker calculates whether there is a win or loss at the stakes.

The main features of the handicap:

  • A Bettor can make a bet, taking into account the odds - an advantage on points/goals. They are added to the result of the selected command.
  • A bet wins if, after adding the odds and the final result, there will be an advantage in favor of the team chosen by the bettor.
  • The bet is returned to the bettor, if the teams are tied, taking into account the odds.
  • A bet loses if, after adding the odds and the final result, there will be an advantage in favor of the opponent of the selected team.

Handicaps are used in all sports disciplines ranging from football, handball, basketball, volleyball, American sports, or even tennis. It is one of the most popular betting options. The most uncomplicated section of the bookmaker"s painting includes European and Asian handicaps. European handicap (EG) is different from the Asian (AH) symbolism, but, incidentally, not only that. The next significant difference that separates these two types of handicaps is the difference in the number of game variants. In the European handicap, there are three choices, and in the Asian - only two. The last important criterion is the fact that European handicaps use whole numbers to form a handicap line (0: 1, 0: 2), and rational numbers with a fractional part (0.25; 0.75) are used in the Asian handicap.

European Handicap

European handicap is much more accessible to understand than its Asian counterpart. The European Handicap (0: 1) equates to option X2 for the victory of the guests, which, however, does not mean at all that the coefficients will be equal in both cases.

A significant disadvantage of this type of handicap is that the bettor can"t return the bet in case of losing it.

Consider the examples of European handicap:

Manchester United - Stoke (0: 1) [-1] Manchester 2.30 / Draw 3.60 / [+1] Stoke

1. We place bets on Manchester United by a factor of 2.30. If Manchester wins Stock with a difference of 2 or more goals (2: 0, 3: 1, 4: 1, 6: 1, etc.), then we get a win.

2. We predict the outcome of a “draw” with a coefficient of 3.60. In the case when Manchester United wins with a difference of 1 goal (the final score is 1: 0, 2: 1, 3: 2, 4: 3), we get the winnings.

3. We foresee the victory of the team Stock [+1] with a coefficient of 2.90. The bet wins if Stock wins or draws (2: 2, 1: 2)

Asian handicap

Asian. There are several types of Asian handicaps. The most popular ones are:

  • Simplest Asian Handicap Draw No Bet (DNB)
  • DNB handicap - draw no bet handicap

If the match chosen by the player ends in a draw (or there will be a draw, considering the handicap), the bet will be returned to the bettor.

For example, Arsenal-Sunderland match (AH +1), predicted 1, and the game ends with Arsenal winning 1-0, after installing the handicap, a total of 2-2 is obtained. Then the bet is returned, according to the “draw no bet” principle.

No integer handicap

We analyze the match “Real (-0.5) - Valencia” for one or Real M.’s victory, with an Asian handicap of -0.5, subtract from the number of goals that Real Madrid scored, which is necessarily equal to the win of Real Madrid.

• If the match ends in a draw 1-1, taking into account the handicap, our result will get a minus (0.5-1) or “one” to win Real Madrid did not come out, the bet did not work.

• If the match ends with a result of 2-1 in favor of Real, then given the handicap, our result will get minus 1.5-1 or “one,” which means that the bet is triggered.

If you intend to bet on a “two” with such a handicap, then this will be equated to a bet against Real Madrid or X2 (a draw or win from the guests brings a win).

Quarter handicap

A quarter handicap is the most challenging type of handicap. Its essence consists in the division of non-integer handicaps into two bets (section of the bet on two options).

We need to divide a bet on the match “Bavaria (-0.25) - Schalke” to “1” (to win Bavaria).

In practice, we will place bets in the following proportions:

  • the first part of the bet - on "Bavaria (-0.5) - Schalke by 1."
  • •the second half of the bet on “Bavaria (+0) - Schalke” = “Bavaria - Schalke (DNB - DrawNotBet)” is also at 1.

Quarter handicap calculation scheme:

• If Bavaria wins - profit from the whole (2 part) rate

• If a match ends in a draw, the second part of the bet loses, and the second half will be returned to the bettor.

• If Schalke wins - the total bet brings a loss.

Advantages of Asian Handicap:

  • significant limits (you can use a large bank)
  • a significant, even 50% chance of winning
  • In some handicaps, if you lose, you can get some of the money back.
